National Day is a good excuse to enjoy the foods we love. Maybe that means a heavier hawker meal, barbecue food, fried snacks, desserts, sweet drinks, or simply eating more than usual while celebrating with family and friends.
The day after, though, I might wake up feeling bloated, sluggish, thirsty, or just a little off my usual routine. My first instinct used to be to “cleanse” everything with very light meals or skip food altogether.
Now, I take a much simpler approach.
I do not think my body needs a dramatic detox after one day of celebrating. What it needs is a return to the habits that already support good digestion and overall health.
I usually start with water. National Day meals can be higher in sodium, especially if I have eaten more processed foods, sauces, fried dishes, or snacks than usual. Drinking water consistently throughout the day helps me get back into my normal rhythm. I also reduce sweetened drinks for a while instead of replacing one indulgence with another.
Next, I bring fibre-rich foods back onto my plate. Vegetables, fruit, oats, brown rice, wholegrain bread, beans, and other fibre sources support normal digestion and bowel movements. I do not try to eat an enormous bowl of raw vegetables all at once, though. If my stomach already feels bloated, gradually returning to my usual fibre intake feels much more comfortable.
I also make sure I am still eating proper meals.
After overeating, it can be tempting to skip breakfast or lunch to “make up” for the extra calories. I find that this usually makes things harder. By the end of the day, I am much hungrier and more likely to overeat again. Instead, I go back to balanced portions with protein, vegetables, carbohydrates, and enough food to keep me satisfied.
Movement is another simple reset. I am not trying to punish myself with an intense workout because of what I ate on National Day. Even a comfortable walk can help me feel less sluggish and get me back into my normal routine.
Sleep matters too. Late-night celebrations, fireworks, gatherings, and extra food can all disrupt my usual schedule. Getting a proper night’s rest helps me feel more ready to make normal choices again the next day.
Most importantly, I remind myself that National Day is one celebration, not a setback.
I do not need detox teas, fasting, or extreme cleanses. For me, the best post-National Day “cleanse” is simply returning to water, fibre, balanced meals, movement, sleep, and consistency.
I enjoyed the celebration; now I just get back to normal.
