Aliwal Street moves at its own pace in the afternoon. Murals fade a little in the sun, someone’s practising guitar behind an open door, and the air smells faintly of coffee and warm bread.
I wasn’t looking for anything grand. I wanted pasta made by hand, served hot, and eaten slowly with a friend across the table.
That’s how I ended up at Tipo Pasta Bar.
Getting to Know Tipo Pasta Bar on Aliwal Street
Tipo sits at 28 Aliwal Street, #01-07, inside Aliwal Arts Centre. It’s homegrown, not imported from Italy. The story begins with its founders making pasta abroad for hungry roommates during late-night study sessions.
Back home, they turned that habit into a restaurant in 2018. Regulars might remember the old North Bridge Road outlet. The Aliwal space is larger, and a second location now runs on Waterloo Street.
The Black Hole Group Behind Tipo Pasta
The concept comes from The Black Hole Group. Tipo describes itself as a halal-friendly fresh pasta group, which makes it an easy choice for mixed tables of friends and family.
A Pasta Bar Dressed in Pastels
Step inside and the colors greet you first: turquoise walls, soft pink, blue seats. Daylight pours through large windows, and warm pendant lights take over as evening settles in.
It’s casual and photogenic, but it doesn’t feel staged. When the room fills, it gets lively. If you want a quiet meal, weekday lunch may treat you better.
The Handmade Pasta Menu
The heart of Tipo is choice. You can build your own pasta from S$9.90, picking a shape, a sauce and your toppings. Or you can trust one of the recommended combinations.
Near the entrance, a display shows the day’s pasta choices. The shapes rotate, so what you see one week may be gone the next. I love that small sense of discovery.
What I'd Order at Tipo Pasta Bar
Classy Carbonara (S$19.90)
This is the bowl I’d steer a first-timer toward. The sauce is made with egg yolks and Grana Padano cheese, rich and glossy. Tender smoked duck adds a savory, almost smoky depth that keeps the cream from feeling flat.
A sous vide egg sits on top. Break it, stir it through, and the whole dish turns silkier. It’s comforting, though by the last few bites I could feel its weight.
Royal Ragu (S$21.90)
Shredded beef and cherry tomatoes in beef jus, finished with Grana Padano. It’s warm and hearty, the kind of plate that suits a rainy evening.
Aglio Alright (S$19.90)
If cream isn’t your mood, this is the lighter path. Tiger prawns, extra virgin olive oil, garlic confit, shaved Grana Padano and a sous vide egg. It’s Tipo’s take on aglio olio, simple and fragrant.
Truffle lovers have long praised Mushroom Madness, with its black truffle paste, but it isn’t always listed. Check if it’s on the menu when you visit.
Sides and Something Sweet
The Whipped Feta Dip (S$8.90) comes with honey, roasted cherry tomatoes and toasted focaccia. It’s good for sharing while you decide. The Truffle Fries (S$13.90) are indulgent, if a little pricey.
Save space for Tipo’s Signature Tiramisu (S$14.90). Espresso-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone mousse, a dusting of cocoa. It’s been on the menu since day one, and it shows.
An Honest Tipo Pasta Bar Review: The Caveats
Not every visit lands the same way. Some diners feel portions are modest for the price, and I understand that view.
Pasta doneness can vary. One shape arrives with a lovely bite; another can lean soft. The flavored pastas also tend to taste subtler than their names suggest. Come for the fresh pasta texture, not dramatic flavor in the dough itself.
A few diners have also found certain proteins or sauces sold out. It helps to keep a second choice in mind.
Service and Reservations
Reviews more often describe the staff as friendly and happy to explain the day’s options, though consistency can depend on the visit. For Friday or Saturday dinner, or a small celebration, I’d book through Chope. Reservations aren’t required, but they’re a smart move on busy nights.
